What is Chevening?
Chevening is the UK government's global scholarship program, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). It funds one-year Master's degrees at any UK university for outstanding future leaders from 160+ eligible countries.
What does it cover?
- Full tuition at any UK university
- Monthly living stipend (~£1,500-£2,000, varies by city)
- Return airfare from your home country
- Arrival and departure allowances
- Thesis grant for your dissertation
Am I eligible?
You must:
- Be a citizen of an eligible Chevening country (see our full list for country-specific pages).
- Have a Bachelor's degree that lets you enter UK postgraduate study.
- Have at least 2 years (2,800 hours) of work experience — this is where most applicants get rejected.
- Apply for three eligible UK Master's programs and receive an offer from at least one by mid-July.
- Commit to return to your home country for 2 years after finishing your degree.

The 4 essays that decide everything
Chevening's essay questions haven't changed materially in years:
- Leadership and Influence (500 words)
- Networking (500 words)
- Studying in the UK (500 words) — why this course, why the UK, why now
- Career Plan (500 words) — short-term and long-term, with specific milestones
Winning essays share three traits:
- Specific numbers. "I mentored 47 students" beats "I mentored many students."
- Show, don't tell. Don't say you're a leader. Describe a moment you led a difficult decision.
- Return-home clarity. Chevening funds people who will change their home country. Vague plans get rejected.
Common mistakes that kill applications
- Applying to only one UK university (must apply to three).
- Forgetting the 2-year work experience requirement — internships count only if they were 30+ hours/week.
- Copy-pasting a generic scholarship essay — Chevening's readers see thousands and can spot recycled content instantly.
- Weak return-home plan — if your career trajectory implies moving to the UK/US permanently, you'll be rejected.
